China has added another one of the biggest thing in the world with the completion of the construction for the Hangzhou Bay bridge. It’s a six-lane bridge spanning 22.5 mile that is claimed to be the biggest over-the-sea structure built in the world.
As the engineers finished work on the final construction block, firecrackers and traditional dancers greeted over a thousand guests at a ceremony in the middle of the bridge.

The 36-km long Hangzhou Bay Bridge starts at Jiazxing and ends at Cixi, around 70 km from Ningbo city in Zheijiang province that will shorten the distance from Shanghai to the industrial city of Ningbo from 400 km to just 80 km.
It’s a six-lane concrete-and-steel bridge that took three years to complete and was one of China’s most challenging construction projects. The cost of the project is around $1.42 billion. For the first time the private sector invested in public infrastructure project in China and more than half of the funds have come from China’s private sector.

The bridge will be open to traffic before the Beijing Summer Olympic Games in August 2008, according to deputy commander-in-chief Jin Jianming.
