China is inviting tourists to visit the underground headquarters of the nuclear weapons research and production base in the remote part of the northwestern province of Qinghai. The base was built in 1958 and was the birth place of China’s atomic and hydrogen bombs, but was closed in the late 1980’s.

It is said that the base will be developed into a key travel site and will become a platform for stimulating the patriotic spirit of Chinese people.

In the headquarters of the base, there are several rooms more than nine meters underground and resistant with concrete. If you visit the site, you will be able to see the underground rooms which now stand empty. Originally there was a research laboratory, electricity generation room, telegraph transmitting room and a command room.

There is a museum built at the base which houses old machinery, as well as clothes and food coupons that belonged to the workers who once staffed the remote site.

A wave of visitors is anticipated, large number of hotels and restaurants are also springing up.
