Sumida River Fireworks Festival is held annually on the last Sunday in July on the banks of Sumida River and attracts over one million spectators every year. The best viewing locations are the boats on the river, but places are limited.
Tokyo’s biggest fireworks display, the Hanabi Taikai is one of the best you’ll ever see, with the added pleasure of street stalls serving hot sake, corn on the cob and other treats.
This is the major event on Tokyo’s cultural calendar that draws crowds of more than a million, with up to 20,000 fireworks lighting up the summer night sky over the city.
There is a competition between two rival Tokyo fireworks companies, resulting in quite a remarkable contest to see which firm can create the craziest display.
Tokyo’s fireworks displays are well known for delivering a fantastic mirage of explosion and color. It officially starts at 7pm but be sure to secure your spot by noon to be able to enjoy a good view of the spectacular firecrackers.
